Black and White Dress

The black and white dress is a project that challenges students to use the positive and negative space to define the desired silhouette. My design features a strapless dress with a fitted bodice and A-line flared skirt.

I drew 8 sketches or options to choose from. In the bottom row, the first one in from the left represents the design I went with.

To create a comfortable fit for the model, the front flange piece was connected to a separate piece that hugs the body at the top of the front neckline. Many samples were done to achieve the best construction of the white flange. Tule was added underneath the skirt to allow for the skirt to hold its shape. In order for the dress to stay in place on the body, a waist stay was sewn in with hooks and eyes to hold it at the waist.
